On Tekumel
In light of this very disappointing revelation today and
from what I have witnessed occurring to others among the less refined aspects
of social media, I feel some of you need to hear this.
Those of you who have been hit hard with this news, like I
have, and are questioning your connection to Tekumel and The Empire of the
Petal Throne, do not let the pressure of those who feel your continued support
of this game reflects poorly upon you or that it shines a questionable light upon
who you are and force you from continuing to enjoy your game that exists within
these properties. Know that I and many, many, others support you. My reason is simple
because, and I will paraphrase what Greg Stafford coined long ago with his
world of Glorantha, YOUR Tekumel may vary.
Your Tekumel, that you or I and so many others have played
in, no matter if it’s been 47 years or 4 days, has transcended far and beyond
what Barker had ever intended or could even predict and as such that world that
began with him as a child and was published in 1975 no longer exists and has
been replaced with what we created. Regardless of what came from today, our
world of Tekumel, the one we created, still belongs to all of us and is not
reflective of what has transpired.
So yes, be disappointed in this news, feel betrayed, feel
disheartened and grieve if you must, never meet your heroes and so on, but do
not let YOUR Tekumel die because of this horrible revelation. YOUR Tekumel is
not his, but mine and ours. YOUR Tekumel is not reflective of that horrid book,
but a wonderfully diverse world. YOUR Tekumel,
like so many other game worlds, is so much stronger than the one who laid its
foundation. So please, continue to make YOUR Tekumel better than what its
creator left to us. Make YOUR Tekumel vary.
Cheers,
Scott AKA Orcusdorkus
